FSC certified packaging is made from paper or board whose fiber has been tracked, through a certified chain of custody, back to forests managed to Forest Stewardship Council standards, to recycled sources, or to controlled sources that exclude the most harmful origins. The FSC label on a box tells a customer where the fiber came from. It does not, on its own, say anything about recyclability, compostability or carbon.
The detail most brands miss is that buying FSC board and printing the FSC logo are two different things. You can order FSC boxes without using the logo at all. Putting the logo on pack requires an unbroken certified supply chain and approval under FSC's trademark rules. This guide explains how that works, what each label type means, and how to specify FSC boards for custom boxes without creating a claim you cannot support.
Key takeaways
- FSC certification has two layers: forest management certification for the forest, and chain of custody (CoC) certification for every company that takes ownership of the material afterward.
- The three on-product labels are FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled. Mix is the most common on packaging.
- A certified claim has to pass from mill to converter on invoices with certificate codes. If any owner in the chain is not certified, the claim stops there.
- Using the FSC logo on packaging requires a certified supply chain, a license code and artwork approved under FSC trademark rules. Buying FSC board alone does not grant logo rights.
- FSC is about fiber sourcing. Pair it with separate, accurate claims if you also want to talk about recyclability.
- Box Sense offers FSC-certified boards on request across common box styles, from 10 units.
What FSC certification actually covers
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit that sets standards for responsible forest management and runs a system for tracing forest products. It does not certify companies itself; independent, accredited certification bodies audit forests and companies against FSC standards.
Forest management certification
A forest owner or manager is audited against standards covering things such as legal compliance, harvesting practices, protection of high conservation values, workers' rights and the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities. Fiber from a certified forest can enter the supply chain as certified material.
Chain of custody certification
Once a tree is cut, the wood changes hands many times: to a pulp mill, a board mill, a merchant, a converter that prints and cuts boxes. Chain of custody certification audits each of those companies to confirm they keep certified material identified, account for it correctly and pass accurate claims to the next buyer.
This is the part that matters to a packaging buyer. FSC certified packaging is only as solid as the weakest link in that chain.
Controlled wood
Not all fiber in an FSC product comes from FSC-certified forests. Controlled wood is material that is not from certified forests but has been assessed to exclude sources FSC considers unacceptable, such as illegally harvested wood or wood from forests being converted to other uses. It can be mixed with certified material in products carrying the FSC Mix label.

How chain of custody works for a custom box
Following a single order from forest to your warehouse makes the system easier to understand.
- Forest. A certified forest sells logs with an FSC claim.
- Pulp and board mill. A CoC-certified mill makes paperboard or containerboard. It records how much certified, recycled and controlled input went into each production batch and assigns an output claim, such as FSC Mix.
- Paper merchant or distributor. If a merchant takes legal ownership of the board, it must also be CoC certified to pass the claim on.
- Converter. The packaging manufacturer prints, die-cuts and glues the board into boxes. To sell the finished boxes as FSC certified, the converter needs its own CoC certification covering those products.
- Sales document. Each certified seller's invoice or delivery document shows the FSC claim and its certificate code. That document is the evidence trail.
- Brand. You receive boxes with a documented FSC claim. Whether you can put the label on pack depends on how the labeling is handled, covered below.
The "broken chain" problem
If any company that takes legal ownership of the material is not certified, the claim cannot continue past it. A common example is a broker or trading company that buys certified boxes from a certified factory and resells them without its own CoC certificate. The boxes may be physically made from FSC board, but the claim is broken and the finished product cannot carry an FSC label on that basis.
Companies that only move goods without taking ownership, such as freight carriers, do not break the chain.
Tip: ask every packaging supplier for its FSC certificate code, then look it up in FSC's public certificate database at fsc.org. The listing shows whether the certificate is valid and which product types it covers.
FSC label types explained: 100%, Mix and Recycled
Products that carry the FSC label use one of three label types. Each tells the customer something different about the fiber inside.
| Label | What the fiber is | Where you tend to see it | What it signals |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSC 100% | All virgin fiber from FSC-certified forests | Less common on packaging; some specialty papers and wood products | Fully sourced from certified forests |
| FSC Mix | A mix of certified forest fiber, recycled fiber and/or controlled wood | The most common label on paperboard and corrugated packaging | Supports certified forestry while allowing flexible supply |
| FSC Recycled | Recycled fiber, post-consumer and/or pre-consumer | Recycled paperboard, corrugated, greyboard | Made from reclaimed material rather than new harvest |
Why Mix is so common
Paper mills blend fiber from many sources to keep supply steady and quality consistent. Mix lets a mill combine certified virgin fiber, recycled fiber and controlled wood under one claim, following FSC's accounting rules. For most custom boxes, FSC Mix board is the most available option across grades and calipers.
Is FSC Recycled better than FSC Mix?
Neither is automatically better. FSC Recycled tells customers the fiber was reclaimed, which fits a circular-economy message. FSC Mix supports responsibly managed forests, which fits a forest-stewardship message. Virgin fiber also has practical uses: bleached SBS paperboard, for example, gives the brightest print surface and strong folding performance, and recycled fiber is shorter and can make board weaker at the same thickness.
Choose the label that matches the story your brand tells and the performance your box needs, rather than treating one as a ranking.
What the FSC label does and does not tell customers
FSC is one of the most recognized sustainability marks on packaging, which makes it easy to over-read. Keep these distinctions straight on your pack and your website.
| Statement | Does an FSC label support it? | What you would need instead |
|---|---|---|
| "The fiber in this box comes from responsible sources" | Yes, within the meaning of the label type | The FSC label and valid chain of custody |
| "This box is recyclable" | No | Recycling access and a recyclable finish, qualified under FTC Green Guides |
| "This box is compostable" | No | Third-party compostability certification for the finished pack |
| "This box is made from recycled material" | Only with the FSC Recycled label or a separate recycled-content claim | Supplier recycled-content specification |
| "Carbon neutral packaging" | No | A separate, substantiated carbon claim |
| "Plastic-free" | No | Every component free of plastic films, foams and windows |
Combining FSC with other claims
A box can carry the FSC label and a separate recycling instruction, and many do. Keep them visually and verbally separate so customers do not assume one proves the other. If you use a recycling label, the finish still matters: a laminated FSC carton is certified fiber with a plastic film on top. Our recyclable packaging guide covers the finish side, and the green claims packaging guide covers how to word environmental claims.

Using the FSC logo on packaging
This is where most confusion sits. FSC logo packaging is governed by FSC's trademark rules, and those rules are strict because the logo is only meaningful if it is used consistently.
On-product labels versus promotional use
- On-product labeling means putting the FSC label on the box itself. It is tied to the chain of custody of the product. In practice, the certified company that makes or labels the product applies the label under its certificate, with artwork approved under FSC trademark procedures.
- Promotional use means using FSC trademarks in marketing, such as a website or catalog, to promote FSC-certified products. Companies that are not certified themselves, such as a brand selling certified products, may be able to use FSC trademarks promotionally through a license arrangement with FSC.
The exact route for your brand depends on your role in the supply chain and current FSC rules. Confirm with your supplier, FSC or an accredited certification body before designing the label into your artwork.
What an FSC on-product label contains
A compliant on-product label is not just the tree-check logo. It generally includes:
- The FSC logo
- The label type, such as MIX, RECYCLED or 100%, with its accompanying descriptive text
- A license code that identifies the certificate holder
- The FSC website address
The label comes in approved layouts and minimum sizes. You cannot redraw it, recolor it outside the allowed options, crop it or fold it across a crease.
Artwork approval
FSC trademark use generally requires approval before printing. Build approval time into your schedule, and do not send print-ready artwork with an FSC label until approval is confirmed. A box printed with an unapproved or unsupported label may need to be reprinted.
Watch out: do not add the FSC logo to your artwork just because your quote says "FSC board." The board being certified is not the same as your finished box being eligible to carry the label. Settle labeling before artwork, not after proofs.
A pre-print checklist for FSC logo packaging
- Every company that takes ownership of the material, including your packaging supplier, holds a valid CoC certificate that covers the product
- Your supplier's invoice will show the FSC claim and certificate code
- The label type on your artwork matches the claim on the invoice (Mix, Recycled or 100%)
- The label includes the logo, label type text, license code and website
- The label is placed on a flat panel, clear of creases, glue areas and die-cut windows
- Minimum size and color rules are met
- Artwork approval has been obtained through the appropriate FSC trademark process
- Any other claims on the box, such as recyclability, are separate and substantiated
FSC, SFI and PEFC: how the major schemes differ
FSC is not the only forest certification you will see on paper products. Buyers and retailers sometimes ask for one specifically, so it helps to know the landscape.
- FSC operates internationally with its own standards and a single global label system.
- SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) is a North American program with forest management, fiber sourcing and chain of custody standards, common on US and Canadian paper products.
- PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is an international umbrella that endorses national certification systems; SFI is endorsed by PEFC.
Each scheme has its own standards, labels and trademark rules, and they are not interchangeable on pack. If a retailer or corporate client specifies FSC, supply FSC documentation. If your brand values are open, compare what each label communicates to your customers and what your supply chain can document.

Specifying FSC boxes: boards, styles and cost drivers
FSC fiber is available across the main packaging boards, so going FSC rarely forces you to change box style. What changes is sourcing and documentation.

Board options
- [SBS paperboard](/materials/sbs-paperboard) for bright retail cartons, cosmetics and supplements. Usually FSC Mix.
- [Kraft paperboard](/materials/kraft-paperboard) for natural-look tuck cartons and sleeves.
- [Corrugated board](/materials/corrugated) for kraft mailer boxes, shipping boxes and displays, often available as FSC Mix or Recycled.
- Rigid greyboard and specialty wrap papers for luxury boxes; check that both the board and wrap are covered if you want a claim for the whole box.
What affects the price of FSC boxes
| Cost driver | Why it matters | How to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Board grade and caliper | Some FSC grades are stocked widely, others need to be sourced for the order | Ask for FSC options in grades your box already uses |
| Label type | FSC 100% board is less widely available than Mix or Recycled | Start with Mix or Recycled unless you need 100% |
| Specialty papers | Textured wraps and colored stocks have narrower FSC availability | Confirm FSC coverage for each paper in the build |
| Quantity | Setup and sourcing spread over more units | Price several quantity tiers |
| Finishes | Foil, embossing, spot UV and inserts add tooling regardless of board | Keep premium finishes to where they earn their place |
As a reference point for standard box pricing before any board upgrade, a straight tuck end carton in 18 pt SBS at 3x2x5 in with full color outside and aqueous coating is about $0.82 each at 250 units and about $0.43 at 2,500. An 8x6x3 in E-flute mailer printed full color outside is about $1.88 at 250 and about $1.00 at 2,500. Ask for FSC board on your quote to see the exact figure for your spec, or run the base spec through the pricing estimator. Our custom packaging cost guide explains the wider cost picture.

Frequently asked questions
What does FSC certified packaging mean?
It means the paper or board in the packaging comes from FSC-certified forests, recycled sources or controlled sources, and that every company taking ownership of the material along the way has been audited for chain of custody. The label tells customers about fiber sourcing. It does not by itself mean the packaging is recyclable, compostable or carbon neutral.
What is the difference between FSC Mix and FSC Recycled?
FSC Mix products contain a blend of fiber from FSC-certified forests, recycled material and controlled wood. FSC Recycled products are made from reclaimed fiber, either post-consumer or pre-consumer. Mix is the most common label on paperboard and corrugated packaging. Choose Mix to support certified forestry and Recycled to emphasize reclaimed material; neither is automatically better.
Can I put the FSC logo on my boxes if I buy FSC board?
Not automatically. The FSC label requires an unbroken certified chain of custody through to the finished product, a license code and artwork approved under FSC trademark rules. Buying boxes made from FSC board is a good first step, but check with your supplier, FSC or a certification body how labeling will be handled before adding the logo to artwork.
Do I need my own FSC certification to sell FSC boxes?
It depends on your role. If your company takes legal ownership of certified products and sells them on with an FSC claim, chain of custody certification is generally required. Brands that simply use certified packaging for their own products may have other routes, such as promotional licensing for marketing use. Confirm the current rules with FSC or an accredited certification body.
How can I check if a supplier is really FSC certified?
Ask for the supplier's FSC certificate code, then search it in FSC's public certificate database. The listing shows the company name, certificate status and the product types covered. Also check that the supplier's invoices will carry the FSC claim and certificate code, since those documents are the evidence trail for your packaging.
Are FSC-certified boxes more expensive?
Often the difference is small for common grades such as FSC Mix SBS, kraft and corrugated board, but it depends on the grade, caliper, label type and quantity. FSC 100% board and certified specialty papers are less widely available and can cost more. Request FSC board on your quote to see the exact price for your specification.
Is FSC packaging recyclable?
FSC-certified paperboard and corrugated boxes are generally as recyclable as the same boxes without certification, because certification is about where the fiber came from, not how it is processed after use. Recyclability depends on finishes and components such as lamination, windows and foam inserts. Make any recyclability claim separately and qualify it under FTC Green Guides.
