Customers increasingly check the box before they check the product. Sustainable packaging is no longer a niche request; it is expected. The good news is that a well-specified paper box can be fully recyclable, look premium and cost about the same as a conventional one.
Start with the board
Paper and board are the foundation of sustainable packaging because they are widely recycled and renewable.
- Recycled paperboard and corrugated: post-consumer content of 70 to 100 percent. Slightly warmer tone; prints well with white top liner.
- FSC-certified virgin board: fibre from responsibly managed forests. Choose this when you need the brightest white and the highest print fidelity.
- Kraft board: unbleached, minimal processing, naturally recyclable and compostable. The visual shorthand for eco.
Avoid boards laminated with metallised film or holographic layers if recyclability is the goal. Paper-based metallic effects are available as an alternative.
Inks
Soy and water-based inks are standard at Box Sense. They contain fewer volatile organic compounds and de-ink more easily during recycling. Full colour is not the problem; heavy solid coverage is what slows de-inking, so design with breathing room.
Coatings and laminations
This is where most "eco" boxes fail. A plastic film lamination (gloss, matte, soft-touch) makes the box hard to recycle in many municipalities.
- Aqueous coating: water-based, recyclable, available in matte or gloss. Choose this by default.
- Varnish: also recyclable, slightly less protective.
- Film lamination: only when you need scuff resistance or the soft-touch feel, and label the box accordingly.
Windows
Standard windows are PET film. Ask for PLA (plant-based) film, which is compostable in industrial facilities, or design a die-cut window with no film at all where hygiene allows.
Inserts and void fill
Replace foam with die-cut paperboard inserts, molded pulp trays or corrugated dividers. Use crinkle paper or printed tissue instead of plastic air pillows.
Right-sizing
The most sustainable box is the smallest one that protects the product. Our engineers minimise the blank, which reduces board, freight weight and shipping emissions. A 10 percent reduction in box volume can cut shipping cost by a similar amount.
Certifications and claims
Only print claims you can support:
- FSC logo: requires the board to be FSC-certified and a licence code on the artwork. We can supply this.
- Recyclable: true for uncoated or aqueous-coated paper and corrugated. Add the local recycling mark.
- Compostable: only for boards, inks and films that are certified. PLA windows are industrially compostable, not home compostable.
- Plastic-free: only if there is no film lamination, no PET window, no foam and no plastic tape.
The premium eco look
Sustainable does not have to mean plain kraft. Techniques that keep recyclability while looking high-end: white ink on kraft, blind embossing (no foil), aqueous matte with a spot varnish, textured uncoated boards, and inside printing in one colour.
