Brown kraft corrugated mailer box with a simple printed design

Custom kraft boxes are boxes made from unbleached, natural brown board and printed with your branding. They come in two main material families: thin kraft paperboard for retail cartons, sleeves and pillow boxes, and kraft-lined corrugated for mailers and shipping boxes. Both give the warm, handmade look that suits soap, candles, coffee, apparel and eco-positioned brands.

The catch is that brown board changes how every color prints. Designs that look crisp on a white screen can turn muddy on kraft unless you plan for it. This guide explains what kraft board is, how ink and white ink behave on it, which styles work best, and what brown kraft packaging costs, so your first run looks the way you intended.

Key takeaways

  • "Kraft" describes the pulping process and the unbleached brown color, not a single material. Kraft paperboard (roughly 14 to 24 pt) and kraft corrugated behave very differently.
  • Ink on kraft is translucent: the brown shows through, so light colors fade and dark colors stay strong. Design with one or two dark inks, or put opaque white ink underneath.
  • Kraft paper boxes hide scuffs and fingerprints better than white board, which makes them forgiving for shipping and handling.
  • Choose white board instead when your brand depends on exact pastels, bright gradients or photography.
  • An 18 pt kraft tuck carton, 4x3x2 in with one-color print, is about $0.81 each at 100 units and about $0.36 at 1,000, with free US shipping.
  • Box Sense prints custom kraft boxes from a minimum of 10 boxes, with free design support and a 3D digital proof.

What makes a box "kraft"

Kraft is a pulping method. Wood chips are cooked in a chemical solution that dissolves the lignin binding the fibers together, leaving long, strong cellulose fibers. The word comes from the German for "strength," and that is the point: kraft paper is tough for its weight.

When that pulp is left unbleached, it keeps its natural tan-to-brown color and visible fiber flecks. That is the board people mean when they say brown kraft packaging. When the same pulp is bleached, it becomes the base for white boards such as SBS.

Because kraft is a natural material, its color varies slightly from batch to batch and between mills. One run may look a touch warmer or lighter than the last. That variation is part of the charm, but it matters if you need two separate orders to sit side by side on a shelf.

Recycled kraft vs virgin kraft

Virgin kraft is made mostly from fresh fiber and tends to be stronger, more uniform and slightly lighter in color. Recycled kraft includes reclaimed fiber, which can make it a little darker, more speckled and softer at the folds. Both print well with the right design approach. If sourcing is part of your story, FSC-certified kraft board is available.

Three kraft materials, three different boxes

When someone asks for kraft paper boxes, the first question is which kind. The answer decides the box's strength, look and price.

Kraft paperboard

This is what most soap boxes, tea cartons and small cosmetic sleeves use. At 18 pt it holds a bar of soap or a small jar comfortably. Move to 24 pt for heavier contents or a sturdier feel in hand. Our kraft paperboard material page covers the grades.

Kraft corrugated

Kraft mailer boxes use corrugated board with a kraft outer liner. They ship through the parcel network on their own and keep that natural look on the doorstep. The corrugated boxes guide explains flutes and grades if you need a stronger build.

Kraft on rigid boxes

A rigid box can be wrapped in kraft paper instead of printed art paper. It gives a premium-natural look that suits artisan food, stationery and eco gift sets. The custom rigid boxes guide explains how wrapped greyboard boxes are built.

How ink looks on brown kraft packaging

This is the section to read before you design anything. Standard printing inks are partly transparent. On white board, the white shows through and makes colors bright. On kraft, the brown shows through instead, so every color shifts darker, warmer and less saturated.

What white ink does

Opaque white ink is a separate, dense ink layer that blocks the brown. Printed alone, it gives you a clean white logo on brown board, one of the most recognizable looks in natural packaging. Printed as an underlay, it acts as a primer under colored inks so they print closer to how they would on white board.

The underlay has to be placed exactly where the color sits. That is a production step your file needs to define, usually as a separate spot layer. We cover the setup in more detail in our guide to white ink on kraft.

Tip: before you commit to a kraft design, print your artwork on a sheet of brown packing paper with an ordinary office printer. It is not a color match, but it shows you in two minutes which elements vanish into the brown and which hold up.

PMS colors on kraft

If you specify a PMS spot color, remember that the swatch book you are matching was printed on white or coated paper. On kraft the same ink will look darker. Printers can adjust, but ask for a physical sample or drawdown if exact brand color matters. The printing and finishes page shows spot color and white ink examples.

A design playbook for custom kraft boxes

Great kraft packaging looks intentional, not like a white design printed on the wrong board. Use this process:

  1. Start from the board color. Treat the brown as your background color, not a blank. Every design choice should be made against it.
  2. Pick one hero ink. Black, a dark brand color or white ink. A single strong color is often the most striking kraft look and the most economical.
  3. Add a second color sparingly. Use it for a small accent, a flavor code or a seal, and test it on kraft first.
  4. Use weight, not color, for hierarchy. Bolder type and larger sizes separate the brand name from details better than tints, which fade on brown.
  5. Keep line art above a comfortable minimum. Kraft fiber is slightly toothy, so hairline strokes and tiny reversed type can fill in. Thicken fine lines and avoid very small knocked-out text.
  6. Plan white ink as its own layer. If you want white elements or bright colors, build a white ink layer in the artwork file.
  7. Check regulatory text contrast. Ingredient lists, net quantity and warnings must stay legible, so print them in your darkest ink.
  8. Proof on the real material. Approve a digital proof for layout, then use a printed sample to judge color.

Say you make a handmade oatmeal soap and want a sleeve that feels like a farmers' market. A single black ink on 18 pt kraft gives you the brand name, a line illustration of oats, the scent and the net weight. Add a white ink panel behind the ingredients and they read clearly without changing the rustic character.

Kraft box styles and where each one shines

Nearly every box style can be made in kraft. These are the ones where brown board adds the most.

Sleeves and tuck cartons for soap and bath

Soap and bath products are the classic home of kraft. A simple sleeve leaves the ends open so customers can smell the product, while a tuck carton closes fully for shipping and shelf stacking. Our soap and bath packaging page shows the common formats, and the sleeve boxes style covers sleeves in detail.

Pillow boxes for small gifts and accessories

Pillow boxes fold from a single flat blank with curved ends that pinch closed. In kraft they suit jewelry, hair accessories, gift cards and wedding favors. They ship flat, assemble in seconds and need no glue. The custom pillow boxes guide goes into sizing.

Mailers for e-commerce

A kraft corrugated mailer hides the scuffs and tape marks that parcel carriers leave behind. Pair a one-color exterior with a printed inside lid for a surprise on opening. If you are shipping heavier items, the custom shipping boxes guide explains when to move to a kraft RSC.

Gable boxes and food carriers

Gable boxes have a built-in handle and work well for bakery items, party favors and small gift sets. For direct food contact, specify food-safe inks and coatings and confirm the board is suitable for the food type.

Finishes and add-ons that suit kraft

Kraft is already textured and matte, so finishes behave differently than on white board.

  • Foil stamping: gold and copper foils look especially rich against brown. It carries one-time tooling of about $60.
  • Embossing and debossing: a blind deboss (no ink) is a subtle, very natural look on kraft paperboard. Tooling is about $60.
  • Aqueous coating: adds light scuff protection without changing the natural feel, and keeps the box easy to recycle.
  • Die-cut windows: a small window shows off a soap bar or candle. Compostable PLA film is available if you want to avoid PET.
  • Twine, ribbon and stickers: inexpensive ways to add a handmade finish without extra print colors.

Spot UV and gloss lamination are possible, but they fight the natural character that brought you to kraft. Most brands use them sparingly or skip them.

Watch out: kraft paperboard is absorbent. Oily or wet products, such as some natural soaps, balms and baked goods, can leave dark spots on uncoated board. Ask for a grease-resistant coating or a liner when you quote.

Kraft vs white board: when kraft is the wrong choice

Kraft suits many brands, but not all. Use this matrix to decide honestly.

If you are split, consider a hybrid: a kraft outer shipper or sleeve with a white inner carton or printed interior. You get the natural first impression and the precise color where it matters. White mailer boxes are the usual counterpart.

Sustainability: what kraft can and cannot claim

Kraft looks sustainable, and it has genuine advantages: unbleached board skips a processing step, the fibers are strong so you can often use less material, and paper-based kraft boxes are widely recyclable.

But the brown color itself is not proof of anything. A kraft box laminated with plastic film, fitted with a foam insert and sealed with plastic tape is harder to recycle than a plain white carton with an aqueous coating. The look and the reality need to match.

To keep kraft paper boxes as recyclable as they appear:

  • Use aqueous coating instead of plastic lamination.
  • Choose paperboard or molded pulp inserts over foam.
  • Use PLA windows or no window at all.
  • Seal with paper tape or a printed sticker.
  • Specify FSC-certified board and soy or water-based inks if they fit your story.

If you print claims such as "recyclable," "compostable" or "made from recycled materials," they must be accurate and appropriately qualified. The Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides set out how environmental claims should be made in the US, so confirm current guidance or ask counsel. Our sustainability page and eco-friendly boxes describe the materials we offer.

What custom kraft boxes cost

Kraft is usually priced close to comparable white board, and one-color printing keeps it economical. Size, structure, finishes and quantity drive the price more than the board color. These indicative per-unit prices include free US shipping:

Spec101005001,0005,000
Soap sleeve or box, 18 pt kraft, 3.5x2.5x1.25 in, 1-color$0.99$0.66$0.35$0.29$0.21
Kraft tuck carton, 18 pt kraft, 4x3x2 in, 1-color$1.22$0.81$0.43$0.36$0.25
Mailer box, E-flute, 8x6x3 in, full color outside$3.99$2.64$1.41$1.17$0.83

Moving from 100 to 1,000 soap sleeves more than halves the unit price. For mailers specifically, our custom mailer boxes cost breakdown goes further, and the instant estimator prices your exact size and print.

Ways to keep kraft costs down

  • Stick to one ink, or one ink plus white.
  • Use a sleeve instead of a full carton where the product allows.
  • Choose a blind deboss rather than foil if you want texture without extra color.
  • Standardize one box size across several products and change only a sticker or stamp.

Frequently asked questions

Can you print full color on kraft boxes?

Yes, but full color printed directly on brown kraft looks darker and more muted because the board shows through the ink. For vivid color or photography, add an opaque white ink underlay beneath the colored areas, or choose white board. Many kraft designs deliberately use one or two dark inks instead, which print crisply and suit the natural look.

What is white ink on kraft?

White ink is an opaque ink that covers the brown board rather than letting it show through. It is used alone for white logos and text on kraft, or as an underlay beneath colored inks so they print brighter. It is set up as a separate layer in the artwork file, so plan it before the design is finalized.

Are kraft paper boxes stronger than white boxes?

Kraft fibers are naturally long and strong, so unbleached kraft board performs well for its weight. In practice, box strength depends far more on the material type and thickness, such as 18 pt paperboard versus E-flute corrugated, than on whether the board is brown or white. Choose the structure for your product first, then the color.

Is brown kraft packaging recyclable?

Plain kraft paperboard and kraft corrugated boxes are widely accepted in curbside recycling. Recyclability drops when you add plastic lamination, foam inserts, PET windows or plastic tape. To keep kraft boxes recyclable, use aqueous coatings, paper-based inserts, PLA or no windows, and paper tape. Confirm any printed claims against FTC guidance on environmental marketing.

How much do custom kraft boxes cost?

It depends on size, style, print and quantity. As a reference, an 18 pt kraft tuck carton at 4x3x2 in with one-color print is about $0.81 each at 100 units and about $0.36 at 1,000, including US shipping. An 18 pt kraft soap sleeve is about $0.29 at 1,000. Use the pricing page for your exact spec.

What products look best in kraft boxes?

Kraft suits products with a natural, handmade or eco story: bar soap, candles, coffee, tea, baked goods, apparel, stationery and small gifts. It also works for e-commerce mailers because it hides scuffs. It is a weaker fit for brands that depend on bright pastels, photography or a clinical, high-tech look, where white board prints more accurately.

Why does kraft board color vary between orders?

Kraft is unbleached, so its tone depends on the wood fiber, the mill and the share of recycled content. Different production batches can look slightly warmer, lighter or more speckled. If two orders must match on the same shelf, mention it when you quote so the same board source can be used where possible.

What is the minimum order for custom kraft boxes?

Box Sense produces custom kraft boxes from a minimum of 10 units. Short runs are printed digitally with no plates and no die charges, which suits handmade brands, market testing and seasonal products. Unit prices drop considerably at larger quantities, so compare a few tiers before choosing how many to order.
