An unboxing video is free advertising, and it starts with the box. The brands that get shared do a handful of things deliberately. Here are twelve of them, with what each adds to the unit cost at 1,000 boxes so you can decide what is worth it.
1. Print the inside (+$0.12 to $0.25)
The single highest-impact upgrade. A plain outside and a bold pattern, message or colour inside creates the reveal moment. One-colour inside print is enough.
2. Use a mailer, not a taped shipper (+$0.10 to $0.40)
Self-locking mailers open cleanly with no knife, and the lid becomes a stage. See our comparison of mailer boxes and shipping boxes.
3. Add a tear strip (+$0.05)
A zipper tear strip means the customer opens the box with one pull and no scissors. It is also tamper-evident.
4. Printed tissue paper (+$0.08 to $0.15)
Custom tissue in one or two colours wraps the product and adds a second reveal. Pair it with a branded sticker seal.
5. Custom inserts (+$0.18 to $0.40)
A die-cut paperboard insert holds every item in place, prevents rattling and makes the layout look designed. It also lets you present a hero product first.
6. Write on the flap
Put a short message on the inside of the lid: a welcome, a thank you, a line of brand voice. It costs nothing if you are already printing inside.
7. A card with a purpose (+$0.06 to $0.12)
Instead of a generic thank-you card, include a card that does something: a discount for the next order, a referral code, a how-to.
8. A QR code that leads somewhere useful
Link to a setup video, a playlist, a personalised page or a review request. Print it large enough (at least 1 in) and test it on the proof.
9. Personalisation at scale
Digital printing makes variable data affordable at low quantities. Print the customer's name or city on the lid for VIP tiers, or run limited-edition designs each quarter.
10. A tactile finish (+$0.10 to $0.20)
Soft-touch lamination or an embossed logo makes the box feel expensive in the hand, which is what people remember when they film it.
11. Right-size the box
An oversized box with air pillows looks careless and costs more to ship. A snug box with a fitted insert looks premium and ships cheaper.
12. Make it worth keeping
Boxes that become storage (a drawer box, a rigid magnetic box) stay in the customer's home with your logo on them. For higher-price products, the extra cost pays back in retention.
